Not a substitute for professional care
Content on this site is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Always consult your physician or qualified healthcare provider about questions regarding your health, nutrition, weight, body composition, or any medical condition.
Specific conditions and contexts
- Eating disorders. If you have a history of disordered eating, calorie tracking can entrench unhealthy patterns. Consider working with a registered dietitian or therapist before starting any calorie tracking program.
- Diabetes and blood-sugar management. Carb tracking informs but does not replace clinical management.
- Pregnancy and lactation. Consult your obstetric provider or RD before setting calorie targets.
- Kidney, liver, or cardiovascular disease. These conditions often require RD- or physician-prescribed macronutrient restrictions.
- Children and adolescents. Calorie tracking is not generally recommended for under-18s.
Accuracy limits of consumer tracker outputs
Consumer calorie tracker outputs typically carry a ±15–25% error band per meal. This is adequate for general weight-management decision-making but is below the threshold for clinical dietary assessment. For clinical nutritional assessment, weighed reference meals and 24-hour recalls administered by a registered dietitian remain the standard.
If you are in crisis
